EN 405:2012 is a European standard that specifies the requirements and test methods for respiratory protective devices used in filtering half masks. This standard aims to provide guidelines for manufacturers, regulators, and users to ensure the safety and performance of these masks.
The Scope of EN 405:2012
EN 405:2012 covers various aspects concerning filtering half masks, including their classification, design requirements, filtration efficiency, breathing resistance, practical performance, marking, packaging, and storage. The standard applies to both reusable and disposable masks and provides specific criteria for each type.
Classification and Design Requirements
According to EN 405:2012, filtering half masks are classified into three types: FFP1, FFP2, and FFP3, based on their ability to filter different levels of particulate matter. These masks should be designed to cover the nose, mouth, and chin securely, while maintaining a comfortable fit for the user.
The masks should also have exhalation valves to facilitate easy breathing and reduce heat and moisture buildup inside the mask. Additionally, they must have adjustable straps or headbands to ensure a proper fit on different facial sizes and shapes.
Filtration Efficiency and Breathing Resistance
The filtration efficiency of masks is determined by conducting laboratory tests following specific procedures outlined in EN 405:2012. Masks must achieve a minimum filtration efficiency of 80% for FFP1 masks, 94% for FFP2 masks, and 99% for FFP3 masks.
Furthermore, the masks' breathing resistance should be within certain limits to avoid excess strain on the wearer's respiratory system. The standard provides test methods to measure the inhalation resistance and exhalation resistance, ensuring that they are acceptable for comfortable use.
