EN 62368-1:2020 is a widely recognized international safety standard for audio/video, information, and communication technology equipment. It is designed to ensure that such equipment does not pose any potential hazards to users or operators. This standard combines two older standards, EN 60065 for audio-visual devices and EN 60950 for information technology equipment, into one unified framework.
The Scope of EN 62368-1:2020
EN 62368-1:2020 covers a broad range of products, including telecommunication equipment, IT equipment, audio and video equipment, electronic toys, and many others. Its scope extends to both new products entering the market and existing products undergoing modifications or upgrades. This standard is applicable to manufacturers, importers, and distributors, as well as testing laboratories and certification bodies.
Key Requirements of EN 62368-1:2020
EN 62368-1:2020 sets out specific requirements related to various aspects of product safety. One of the key principles is hazard-based safety engineering, which focuses on identifying potential hazards and implementing appropriate safeguards. Under this standard, manufacturers are required to conduct risk assessments, ensuring that all reasonably foreseeable use scenarios are considered during the product design stage.
Additionally, EN 62368-1:2020 emphasizes protection against electric shock, fire hazards, mechanical hazards, and thermal hazards. It specifies clear guidelines for insulation, creepage, clearance distances, and temperature limits, among other important safety parameters. The standard also addresses issues such as energy efficiency, electromagnetic compatibility, and environmental considerations.
Transitioning from Previous Standards
Manufacturers and stakeholders who have previously complied with EN 60065 or EN 60950 will need to transition to EN 62368-1:2020 to ensure continued compliance. The transition period for the standard began in December 2020, and full implementation is expected by December 2023. During this period, manufacturers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the new requirements and make any necessary changes to their product design and testing processes.
